Scene 14

14.       THE SCENE IS IN OPERATIONS, WHERE SISKO, DAX, KIRA, AND

OTHERS ARE WORKING AS USUAL.

SISKO

Major, would you check on these readings with Odo

and get his evaluation?  Tell him I'll need it in his report

                                    by 1400 hours tomorrow.

KIRA

                                    Yes, commander.

Kira rises from her seat at the console and takes a computer disk from Sisko.  She approaches the turbo lift, eyes casually looking at the floor as she walks.  Just as she reaches the lift, Kira looks up and stops, shocked to see Jaren standing at the top of the lift.  She swallows hard and just stares at him motionless.

JAREN

                                    (stunned)  Kira!

KIRA

                                    Jaren . . .

Jaren takes a step forward, unsure of what to do or say.  A moment of silence ensues as they peer into one another's eyes, apprehensive.

JAREN

                                    Kira . . . I thought.  I mean, they told me you were . . .

                                    dead.

KIRA

(as if to explain)  Jaren -

JAREN

(holds up a hand)  No.  Don't speak.  Just let me look

                                    at you.

Everyone in Ops watches uncomfortably as Jaren walks toward Kira and stops just short in front of her.  Kira turns her head away briefly, self-conscious.  Jaren's eyes take in all of Kira, appearing as though he's seen a ghost.  Kira is tentative and anxious though not sorry to look back upon him.

JAREN

(tenderly)  What happened?  Where did you go?  I

                                    searched everywhere.  I . . . I couldn't believe you were

                                    gone.

KIRA

                                    Jaren . . . I don't think this is a very good place . . .

(looking briefly at everyone behind her)

JAREN

(ignoring her remark)  Didn't you know i was on the

                                    station?

Kira nods, pauses.

KIRA

                                    (softly)  Yes.

Jaren shakes his head wonderingly, unable to comprehend Kira's behavior.  He extends his hands palms up, pleadingly.

JAREN

Then why didn't you come to me when you knew

                                    I had arrived?  I – (sudden revelation)  Is there . . .

                                    someone else?

Kira shakes her head, placing her hands on her forehead as she fights conflicting feelings within.

KIRA

                                    No.  I just . . . couldn't.  There's so much to explain.

(begins to move, frustrated)  You wouldn't understand.

Kira suddenly dashes to the turbo lift, much to Jaren's surprise.  Sisko and the others in Ops appear embarassed and perplexed, watching quietly.

JAREN

                                    (turns)  Kira!  Wait!

Jaren takes a few steps forward, but the lift has already descended before he can react in time.  He turns to face the others in Ops, hurt and confused.
