Scene 13

13.       JAREN AND HIS TWO COMPANIONS ARE WALKING ON THE

PROMENADE AND ENTER QUARK'S BAR.  ONLY A HANDFUL OF

CUSTOMERS REMAIN LATE AT NIGHT.  THE STOPS AT THE

ENTRANCE, LOOKING AROUND, UNTIL CREW MEMBER #2 SPOTS

QUARK SPEAKING QUIETLY TO AN ALIEN FEMALE AT THE BAR.

JAREN AND THE TWO MEN APPROACH.

CREW MEMBER #1

                                    You there.  Ferrengi.

Quark pays little attention to the men, engrosses in his wooing.  He points off-handedly toward his brother, Rom, behind the counter.

QUARK

My brother will get your drinks.

CREW MEMBER #1

                                    (irritated)  I'm talking to you.

JAREN

(softly)  Are you the one whey call Quark?  I am told

you may be of assistance to me.

Quark glances at Jaren and his friends, suddenly recognizing them.  Instantly, thoughts of avarice replace any notions of wooing.  Carefully, he walks out from behind the bar and appraches the two men.

QUARK

Is this a 'business' proposition, gentleman?

JAREN

Maybe.  It depends on what you know.

Quark adjusts his coat and assumes his business demeanor.  Rom comes over to help, but Quark nudges him away.

QUARK

I've got this Rom.  Go do something important . . . (looks

                                    around, like . . .

ROM

(jittery)  Like keeping your 'friend' busy?  (smiles and oggles

                                    the alien female)

QUARK

Yes – I mean, no!  Go wipe some glasses or something.

Rom leaves, disappointed.  Quark readjusts his collar and resumes his conversation.

QUARK

Now, what'll you gentlemen have to drink?

JAREN

(ignoring the offer)  I'm looking for someone.  Someone

                                    you know.

Quark leans against the counter, speaking in a tone of confidentiality.

QUARK

Well now, information . . .  That's going to cost you

something.  (smiles slyly)  Who are you looking for?

CREW MEMBER #1

                                    (angered)  Why you little -

Jaren moves is arm to intervene.

JAREN

I'm looking for a Bajoran woman who's here on this

station.  Kira Nerys.  Do you know her?

Quark looks around him to ensure no one is listening.

QUARK

                                    Hmmm.  That depends.

CREW MEMBER #1

                                    (incredulous)  Upon what?

QUARK

Upon who's looking for her and how badly they want to

                                    find her.

JAREN

(ignoring Quark's remark)  My friends tell me you were

speaking to her, here, last night.

QUARK

(flippant)  I speak with a lot of customers.  That doesn't

                                    mean I remember their names.

Crew member #1 lunges at Quark, infuriated.  But Jaren places his hand upon the man's shoulder, and crew member #1 lets go.  Quark jerks his head and feigns to dust off his clothing, offended by the rough treatment.  Jaren peers hard at Quark.

QUARK

But, maybe if you tell me why you need to see her, I can

possibly relay a . . . message to her.  If I ever see her.  (aside

to Jaren in a secretive voice)  Is this about the 'cargo' you

recently obtained from the Gamma Quadrant?

JAREN

That doesn't concern you.  All I want is to know if one

of those women was Kira Nerys.  You called her 'major.'

Does she work her, then, on this station?

Quark is somewhat offended by the diminished prospect of earning any profit from all of this.

QUARK

(feigning boredom)  The only major I know is Major Larna

Hen.  I don't quite recall (holding out hand for a bribe) any

                                    Kira Ner -

CREW MEMBER #1

That isn't what she called herself you little Ferrengi.  Get

                                    your lies straight!

Jaren turns his head, and Quark doesn't notice the man's angry face.

QUARK

Now, of course, for an equal share of your market in the

Gamma Quadrant, I might be able to locate -

Jaren suddenly turns and grabs Quark by the collar, pulling him on top of the counter.  He puts his face close to Quark's and scares the Ferrengi with a ous look.  Rom sees all of this and wobbles over to assist.

ROM

(excited)  Quark!  You can't do that to my brother.

Jaren's two companions give Rom a threatening look to which Rom responds by turning around as quickly as he came.  The Bajorans turn their attention back to Quark.

JAREN

You will tell me what I want to know, Ferrengi, or I

will kill you.  Now, where can I find Kira Nerys?

QUARK

                                    Well, ah . . . maybe for just a . . . tiny share of the

                                    profit?

Jaren shakes him.

QUARK

                                    I . . . I . . . I.  Listen, I'll tell you all I know.  Just

                                    please don't -

JAREN

Speak up, Ferrengi.  I'm losing my patience.

QUARK

She's ah . . . yes.  She's on board.  She works here.  On

                                    the station, I mean.

JAREN

                                    Where?

QUARK

                                    In Ops.

Jaren peers hard at Quark, then slowly releases his grip.  He tosses Quark to the floor and turns quickly to leave the bar.  Jaren turns sharply to speak with his companions.

JAREN

Wait here.  (then to Quark)  If you're lying, Ferrengi . . .

Jaren EXITS.
