Scene 4

4.         SISKO ARRIVES AT KIRA’S QUARTERS AND ‘RINGS.’  THE DOOR

OPENS, AND HE STEPS INSIDE.  KIRA IS STANDING ACROSS THE

ROOM, FROZEN IN PLACE.  HER GREAT RELIEF SHOWS WHEN SHE

SEES IT IS ONLY SISKO.  SHE TRIES, SUDDENLY, TO HIDE HER

EXPRESSION.  HER EYES ARE RED FROM CRYING.

KIRA

                                    Commander, it’s you.  Ah . . .

SISKO

(with a tone of concern)  Who else were you expecting,

                                    major?

KIRA

Ah . . . no one.  (uncomfortable silence)  How are you

                                    doing?

SISKO

I was about to ask you that same question.

KIRA

                                    I’m . . . I’m fine now.

SISKO

Something awfully important must have happened for

you to disregard my request.  Odo said you looked a

                                    little shaken.  Is everything alright?

Kira unconsciously touches her eyes to wipe them.

KIRA

                                    You saw Odo?

Sisko nods, smiling.

KIRA

He told you I wasn’t feeling well?

Sisko nods again.

KIRA

(stumbling over her words)  I don’t know what it was,

                                    commander.  I just felt a little . . . dizzy, that’s all.  It’s

all this extra work I’ve put in lately coordinating

with Minister Tarkov.  I guess I’ve been working too

                                    hard.

SISKO

                                    (smiling)  I guess!

KIRA

I’m feeling fine now.  (seeing doubt on Sisko’s face)

                                    Really I am.

Sisko still appears a bit unconvinced.

SISKO

If you felt ill, major, why didn’t you report to sick

bay to have Dr. Bashir check it out?

KIRA

                                    (exasperated)  Commander, please . . .

SISKO

Well then, as soon as you’re up to it, I hope to see

                                    you back in Ops.

KIRA

                                    (nodding)  Yes, commander.  I’m ready.

Kira and Sisko EXIT.
